Best Cities For Friends Meeting From Europe And Asia

Istanbul keeps winning the unofficial vote for friend groups crossing the Bosphorus of timezones - here's why, and what else came close.

Every friend group has that one chat where someone from Berlin and someone from Bangkok try to find a fair city. After dozens of these debates, Istanbul keeps coming back up - and there's a reason it's not just sentiment.

Why Istanbul Keeps Winning

Istanbul Airport (IST) connects to more cities nonstop than almost any other hub on earth. For a Berliner that's a 3-hour hop, for a Bangkok-based friend it's around 9. Compare that to forcing one side onto a 14-hour flight and the math gets uncomfortable fast. Visa rules are also gentle for most passports, e-visas land in a day, and getting from the airport to Sultanahmet on the M11 metro plus tram is under 90 mins if you don't get lost. We always do.

The city itself rewards a 4-day meeting. Karakoy for breakfast, a ferry over to Kadikoy for the Tuesday market, late dinners in Cihangir. It's a city you can split up in during the day and reconvene at night without anyone feeling shortchanged.

Runner Up: Dubai

If your group skews business travelers or anyone who hates layovers, Dubai is a strong second. Emirates and flydubai cover most of Europe and Southeast Asia nonstop, the metro from DXB works, and hotel deals on weekdays in summer are oddly reasonable. The trade-off is summer heat that will end your walking ambitions by 11am and a city that asks more from your wallet than Istanbul does.

That said, for short reunions where everyone wants the same hotel pool and a shared dinner reservation, Dubai is honestly hard to beat. We tend to recommend it for groups of 4 or more meeting for just a long weekend.

Wildcards That Worked

Tbilisi (TBS) is the surprise pick for friend groups that include someone from the Caucasus or Central Asia. Cheap, charming, and weirdly close to both Europe and Asia by flight time. Doha is also rising fast for groups with at least one Australian member, since the QR network from DOH to Sydney and Melbourne has matured.

One soft tip: whichever city you pick, agree on a single neighborhood for your first 24 hours. Reunion energy is fragile, and three taxis going to three Airbnbs in three districts will quietly drain it.
