Edinburgh is the rare European capital that fits a friend weekend without feeling cramped. Hills you can climb, whisky bars you can sit in, and a Sunday-morning walk that beats most of the rest of the trip.
Friday: Land, Walk, Eat
Tram from the airport to Princes Street, drop bags in a New Town hotel like Tigerlily or a stay in Stockbridge. Walk down to The Last Word Saloon or The Antiquary for a first pint - both feel like real Edinburgh bars rather than tourist ones.
Dinner at Aizle or The Little Chartroom if you booked ahead. Otherwise Dishoom Edinburgh - the queue moves and the bacon naan is still the right move at 9pm on a friend weekend.
Saturday: Arthur's Seat And The Old Town
Arthur's Seat at 8:30am. It takes 45 minutes up, your friend will complain, the view at the top will fix it. Breakfast at Cafe Modern One on the way down if you walk to the Modern Art galleries.
Afternoon: walk the Royal Mile properly, then duck off into The Real Mary King's Close for the underground tour. Whisky at The Bow Bar before dinner at Ondine for seafood or Howies for a Scottish set menu.
Sunday: Stockbridge Morning
Coffee at Artisan Roast in Stockbridge. The Sunday market if it's the right weekend. Walk along the Water of Leith path to Dean Village - 20 minutes, one of the best urban walks in Europe. Brunch at Hamilton's, then a slow Sunday afternoon before evening flights.
